“In 2015, the Jury of the Sarphati Sanitation Awards (SSA) unanimously voted to award the Life Time Achievement Award to Dr Kamal Kar, pioneer of the CLTS (Community Led Total Sanitation) approach and the Founder of the CLTS Foundation. Since its establishment in 2008, the Foundation has helped create a paradigm shift that has positively influenced the behaviour of millions of people. In thousands of villages throughout Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Pacific islands, people have started building their own toilets and helping their peers to do the same, in order to make entire communities free of open defecation.
