REPORT FROM BENIN: Training of Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) Facilitators

This week, the Ministry of Health in Benin, in coordination with UNICEF, organised a training for Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) facilitators in Bohicon commune, located in Zou Department, 100km north of Cotonou. The training aims to accelerate the implementation of the new National Strategy for Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion in Benin (2013).

The training workshop is being facilitated by Dr. Kamal Kar, from the CLTS Foundation in Calcutta, India;AbdallahAbdelrassoul, from UNICEF Chad;  Virginie Mahan from UNICEF Ivory Coast; with the support of the UNICEF Benin WASH team (Balde Mamadou Mouctar, WASH Specialist and Wilfried Houeto, WASH Officer). The workshop is also being supported by David Délienne from the UNICEF West and Central Africa Regional Office, and Louise Maule from UNICEF New York.

Almost 100 participants are attending the CLTS facilitators training, including representatives from the Ministry of Health at national and subnational levels, national NGOs (CERID, AERAMR, ALDIPE) and international NGOs (Plan International, SNV and EAA).

The training included two days of theoretical learning, followed by two days of field work to give the participants the opportunity to put theory into practice in 16 different localities. The final day will cover the preparation of community actions plans, with the overall objective of trying to achieve a completely open defecation free (ODF) Zou Department by the end of 2014.

RAPPORT DU BENIN: Formation des Facilitateurs sur l’Approche Assainissement Total Pilote par la Communauté « ATPC ».

Le Ministère de la Santé du Benin en collaboration avec le bureau UNICEF dans le pays organisedans la commune de Bohicon, située à 100 km au Nord de Cotonou dans le département de Zou, un atelier de formation des facilitateurssur l’Approche Assainissement Total Pilote par la Communauté « ATPC ». Cet atelier vise à donner un coup d’accélérateur à la mise en œuvre de la nouvelle Stratégie Nationale pour la Promotion de l’Hygiène et l’Assainissement du Benin (2013).

Cet atelier est facilité par Dr. Kamal Kar, venu de CLTS foundation de Calcutta en Inde, Abdallah Abdelrassoul, venu d’UNICEF Tchad, VirginieMahan du Bureau UNICEF Cote d’Ivoire avec l’appui de l’équipe WASH UNICEF du Benin (Balde Mamadou Mouctar, WASH Specialiste et Wilfried Houeto, WASH Officer). Cet atelier est également soutenu par le Bureau Régional de l’UNICEF WCARreprésenté par David Délienne  et du siège de l’UNICEF à New York représenté par Louise Maule.

Il faut noter que cet atelier couvre 100 participants venus du Ministère de la Santé du Benin de différents niveaux et des ONG nationales (CERID, AERAMR, ALDIPE) et internationales (Plan International, SNV, EAA).

Les participants ont été imprégnés pendant deux jours a un apprentissage théorique, suivi de deux jours de mise en pratique dans 16 localités et d’un jour consacré à la préparation des plans d’action communaux pour amener le département du Zou au stade de Fin de Défécation à l’Aire Libre avant la fin de l’année 2014.
